Christmas trees aid Angel Gowns

Christmas trees aid Angel Gowns

Save
By Danielle Nicholson
When Hamilton midwife Kirstin Rouse launched Angel Gowns 18 months ago, she had no idea the service turning wedding dresses into gowns for stillborn babies and babies who die in early infancy would be so popular. Or how much it would cost her financially.
But the woman who suggested Kirstin launch Angel Gowns is now helping Kirstin with those costs.
Cassie Emmett and Kirstin met through their work - Cassie is a birth photographer - and it was Cassie who heard about another angel gown service and suggested Kirstin could do the same here in New Zealand.
While Kirstin has recruited a team of about 100 people around the country who deconstruct the wedding gowns and turn them into tiny gowns for the babies, she pays for the substantial postage costs out of her own pocket.
Every gown she posts costs $9 and she includes a pre-paid pack so the sewer can return the angel gowns. Kirstin then sends out bulk lots of gowns to hospitals around the country where they are distributed to bereaved families.
Kirstin hasn't kept track of how much the postage costs her, but estimates it's thousands of dollars.
However, Cassie and her family hope to give Kirstin a "sizeable cheque" to help with the postage costs. The family lives on a lifestyle block just south of Hamilton.
They used to run sheep on their land but Cassie hated killing them and so they've planted the land with pine trees to sell this Christmas. Regardless of size, each tree is priced at $20 and the Emmett family will give $1 from each tree sale to Kirstin.
Cassie estimates there are 1200-1500 trees for sale so if they all sell, that'll go a fair way to helping Kirstin with postage costs.
Kirstin has been inundated with wedding gowns to the point where she has run out of room to store them all so has asked for donations of dresses to go on hold for awhile.
The Emmett's Christmas tree farm - Pines and Needles - will open for business from tomorrow and will be open weekends from 9am-8pm and weekdays from 5-8pm until the trees have sold out. They are taking cash and eftpos payments.
The farm is located at 12 Middle Rd, off Raynes Rd. For more information see www.facebook.com/PinesandNeedlesChristmasTreeFarm.

The empty chair

I just watched the dying of Hayley in Coronation Street.
It showed how her husband Roy grieved.
It was a very tasteful scene with her friends consoling him.

Today in America, families celebrate Thanksgiving.
Among the grieving mothers community,
They started. "My empty chair" and remembering their lost child.
Some even losing, 2 or 3.

They talk of their heartache.
They talk to their emptiness.
They talk of their sleepless nights.

For me, Andrew's chair had been empty 26 years.
I no longer feel the emptiness.
God channeled my grief to writing to console those who grieve.

Happy Birthday, 26 years in Heaven.

26 years ago, on 22 November 1989,
My baby Andrew went to heaven.
My heart broke,
My life shattered.

It's been  long hard  years,
My arms were heavy,
seeing other babies were heart wrenching.

Life was like a piece of puzzle that is missing.
Life was like a bowl that had cracked,
No amount of or repair will make it better.
You will always see the cracks.

Bye and Bye,
That pottery comes with a new concept.
It has become a Kintsugi (金継ぎ?)
It can look beautiful.

One day, when Andrew was 21,
I told myself,
I have cried long enough.
Channel your energies to help others.

This I did,
and Life has become better.
I can go to a mom who has just lost her baby,
I hold her hand and tell her it's okay to cry.

Kintsugi (金継ぎ?) (Japanese: golden joinery) or Kintsukuroi (金繕い?) (Japanese: golden repair) is the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with lacquer resin dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.

It's ok to cry. Andrew's birthday month

Like Keanu, I talk about Andrew. It is not about glorifying myself, but to give a voice to bereaved parents. I constantly have new friends, and it is to hope they can watch this you tube and hopefully they can help their friends who have bereaved friends.

This is Andrew's 27th birthday month.

When I wrote my book, Diary of a bereaved mother, it was to help new

bereaved mothers and to help myself. Television New Zealand asked me

if I wanted to help them do a documentary. It was to help other

bereaved mothers.

It was very hard to do the documentary.

Today is the first birthday of a bereaved mum after her baby had died.

This blog is for you.

This is the second time I read about Keanu talk about his still born baby. I am glad he spoke.

"Most people know me, but don't know my story. At the age of 3, I watched my father leave. I attended four different high schools and struggled with dyslexia, making my education more challenging than it is for most. Eventually I left high school without earning a diploma. At the age of 23, my closest friend River Phoenix died of a drug overdose. In 1998, I met Jennifer Syme. We fell instantly in love and by 1999, Jennifer was pregnant with our daughter. Sadly, after eight months, our child was born stillborn. We were devastated by her death and it eventually ended our relationship. 18 months later, Jennifer died in a car accident. Since then I avoid serious relationships and having kids. My younger sister had lukemia. Today she is cured, and I donated 70% of my gains from the movie Matrix to Hospitals that treat leukemia. I am one of the only Hollywood stars without a Mansion. I don't have any bodyguards and do not wear fancy clothes. And even though I'm worth $100 million, I still ride the subway and I love it! So in the end, I think we can all pretty well agree that even in the face of tragedy, a stellar person can thrive. No matter what's going on in your life, you can overcome it! Life is worth living."

My book was exhibited  at the Peacock

I  presented a workshop on Asian Infant Bereavement at the Sands National conference for Sands families and medical personnels for 200 attendees in September 2013

Used as a reference book for NICU staff at the University Hospital, Toronto.

Dr Simon Rowley is a consultant at Starship Children's Hospital who's been given a copy of the book.
"It is a good reminder to all health professionals that when our patients leave us, the story does not end for the parents. The detail is amazing, and every little thought and action seems to have been recorded as it happened, and then has been reflected upon.
"For parents undergoing similar experiences this book could be a great comfort. For health professionals, I would see it as essential reading."

This is a hundred-year-old journal of two families, the Chans and the Kongs. It traces the first movement in 1907 from Kwang Zhou, China to the jungles of Borneo. It is a six-generational record with the second wave of movement to England, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Australia, USA ...

This book records with humor the life of a busy and active family through World War II, the formation of Malaysia and Confrontation. It is a personal reflection of a way of life that has moved on and provides insight into a family and its relationships. It is most of all a work of love and respect for the Chan and Kong families and for Father and Mother.
