Jacqueline's story

Jacqueline Mead. Photo / Michael Craig

Twenty five years ago, we were told our baby son was very sick. He would die, and if he survived, he would be very severely handicapped. He survived 55 days, it was just long enough for us to give him our love and not to resent having to care for such a special needs child.

While Andrew was alive, people reading his notes tell me that I had every right to take up my case with the ante natal team. It took so long for the hospital to response that I got so tired. All they did was apologise. They were grateful I didn't take further action and sue them. What was the point, Andrew was dead.

When I wrote my book, Diary of a bereaved mother, One of my motivation was to help other bereaved mums.

The book led me to Susan Meads. Susan is a bereaved mum like me, told me about this cause. Her Jackie had a lot of special needs. They have to think ahead of Jackie's need when she, and her husband is gone. Something, which was a relief for us that we didn't have to worry.

Susan is one mum I can help with my writing.

Eleven-year-old Jacqueline Mead suffered a stroke and haemorrhage when she was a baby, as a result of medical misadventure. Now the parents of the little girl who survived against all odds are trying to secure her future, writes Susan Edmunds

Cruel

Last Thursday, I shared with my Home Group about the danger of some groups claiming that the Holy Spirit will do anything if we have faith.

Today, in my Grieving Mothers group, a member posted, "insisting "prayer works" to women with dead children to be at worst cruel and at best in very poor taste:"

I totally agree. When my baby Andrew was in NICU, after being diagnosed to be terminal, some one came and said if I believe, my baby will be healed. It was very disturbing. Despite telling them that the doctors had diagnosed. They kept badgering me.

The nurse saw me, and later anyone who were not friends were banned from coming to see me and Andrew.

Midwives

I know that not everyone will agree, and some may not have had great experiences with midwives or medical personnel. ..but as a midwife, I have shed many more tears than I ever thought a midwife would doing this job

Ann Chin I am sure the midwife, nurses, medical personnel, physio, they all cried when my baby died after 55 days in NICU. There were a few fuzzy anecdotes, the mid wife who delivered my baby, was the person who opened the door, when I came to say good bye to my son. She told me, she often sneaked up to NICU to see Andrew. I like to share this.

Ann Chin They all came to say goodbye to their favourite man . Another warm anecdote was the specialist who attended to Andrew was the one who pronounced him dead and signed his death certificate. To me, it was like a complete circle.

Tyla Nathan Wong: newly appointed Canteen Ambassador and letter N

I met Tyla Nathan Wong during the New Zealand Chinese Association Chinese New Zealand dinner. Very proud of her.

Tyla Nathan Wong :My Story

I've created this page because I want to make a difference. I am a newly appointed Canteen Ambassador. I wanted to be apart of Canteen to help make a difference and to be apart of something bigger. I am inspired by the work of Canteen New Zealand and wanted to support them by raising money as part of my participation in The Crank 2015-Auckland. Help me help them by using the 'Give Now' button. The more people that know about Canteen New Zealand, the greater their impact. So please help by spreading the word by sharing my page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it truly means a lot.xx

CanTeen New Zealand

CanTeen exists for the benefit of young people (aged 13 to 24) living with cancer – be they patients, siblings or bereaved siblings. Our mission is to support, develop and empower them throughout their cancer experience, with the ultimate goal that they not only survive it but that that t they go on to thrive beyond it.
As a newly appointed CanTeen New Zealand Ambasador I'm taking part in The Crank-Auckland. The Crank is a 12 hour indoor cycling spectacular where people raise their heart beats and raise money to support young people living with cancer.
This is all happening on the 21 August. My goal over the next few days is to try and reach $300 but it would be awesome if we could surpass that!!
I will be up on stage cycling at 1pm, but I will be there early to get amongst the atmosphere. If your doing nothing/not busy come down and join/show your support. Alexis Tapsell will also be joining me.

Here is a link if you wish to make a donation and thank you very much in advance!!

Ann Chin's personal story.  By now, you all know that my baby died of a terrible syndrome. I grieved a lot. But after he died, life could go on to some sort of a normalcy if there is such a thing. I still do not know if it is better to suffer intensely for a short time, or for those mums who have children suffering a lifetime. I have a friend who has 3 children afflicted of serious problems. That tugs my heart strings.
